Description:The Beale Street music scene at this time consisted of two styles; up-scale jazz played by artists such as Phineas Newborn Sr. Matt was one of the few musicians who was able to successfully bridge the gap and play with both factions. I have been lucky enough to see Mr. Murphy perform several times over the past 15 years. On a personal note, Matt has been such an influence on me that several years ago I put together a band that featured his former lead singer David Cox and his bass player extraordinaire, the late, great Charles Calmese.
